We are doing a trip while being conscious of social distancing to highlight how it can be done safely and effectively at Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel
The Finger Lakes, New York are a 5-6-hour drive from Boston making it an ideal location far enough away to feel like a vacation, with ample space to do safely. The hand sanitizer was everywhere, and all staff wore masks and kept the resort spotless.
Having a room service breakfast in your room on a balcony overlooking water could be the most relaxing way to enjoy a meal during a covid vacation. You remain social distanced with plenty of time to enjoy without being rushed, and a sunrise is the most calming way to start your day.
You cannot talk about Watkins Glen without mentioning the Falls, and they are everywhere. Hector Falls is literally beside a road! It is amazing to think this beautiful area is only accessible by parking on the side of a highway.
A little bit more traditional are the 19 water falls in Watkins Glen State Park, with stairs and pathways carved into a natural gorge. My favorite is Rainbow Falls below.
Planning dining during a vacation right now can be hard because everyone has different comfort levels. Your best bet is to have lots of options to keep everyone happy. Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel was exceptionally good about expanding their outdoor dining area and keeping tables properly distanced. There was also seating inside with ample air conditioning for those who felt comfortable doing so.
The staff also stressed that room service was available and encouraged it for those who wished. Obviously with the views, balconies, and local wine many visitors purchase, this is a great option for late mornings and early evenings.
A quick trip 20 minutes south will allow you to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. In addition to the formal museum, they offer a dozen demonstrations a day. These ladies will blow your mind with how easily they manipulated glass. I wish I recorded more, but I wanted to be respectful of all the demonstrations the museum presents. The space is large enough to accommodate social distancing without feeling like you are all alone.
Walking distance from the hotel was Tobey’s Donut Shop, made fresh daily and with a fast moving socially distanced line out the door, this is what a donut shop should be. It was a great departure day treat, and their sour cream donuts hit the spot.
